Since the Mercury was still not considered clean from the standpoint of CNP related software, the tour was conducted on the Valkyrie class vessel, the Falcon. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Many of this class of ship were named after birds. Nobody\nknew why. Someone liked birds at the office that choose ship names.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The facility was impressive. A number of structures had been\nconverted to the task of warship building. There were three observatories that\nwere designed to dock six smaller vessels. These had been modified and extended\nso they could now accommodate a Mercury Class Battlestar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Crews were at work, repairing battle damage on a wide\nvariety of ships.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Major Martin conducted the tour from the forward observation\nlounge of the ship. Communications infrastructure was limited to light signals.\nThe room had been insulated against all known forms of transmission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The Falcon was moving around the shipyard and a Minerva\nClass Battlestar came into view. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThat is a Minerva?\u201d Lawson\u2019s draw dropped. \u201cI trained on\none of those. I thought they were all taken apart.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWe assembled this one from the hulks of four others that\nthe scrap yard had drifting around. The contracts called for the complete disassembly\nof the ships. The contract terms were interpreted quite liberally.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThank the gods for that,\u201d Lawson replied, showing little\nemotion or devotion in her voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cYes thank the gods,\u201d Martin said, sounding more like a\nbeliever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cYou have eight ship building and maintenance platforms in\nall?\u201d Lawson asked, proving she had read the 900 pages of intelligence briefing\nmaterial she was given by hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cYes. Four converted observatories, an actual platform that\nwas supposed to be assembled and added to Scorpia shipyards and three put\ntogether from wreckage salvaged at various fleet bases.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cAll fully FTL capable?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cYes commander,\u201d after the revelations about Brother John\nthe Cylon, Martin had a hard time saying these words without having a second\nthought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cBriefing says it takes ten minutes to button everything\ndown and make a jump. That is an eternity in terms of the way combat has gone\nwith the Cylons in this war. Any way we can speed it up?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWe run a couple of drills a week,\u201d answered Major Martin.\n\u201cIt disrupted the entire production cycle, but we think we can get it down to\nseven or eight minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThat sounds good. I\u2019d like to watch the next drill.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cOf course, commander.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThat NCO who killed two security guards. What did the\ninvestigation yield?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cMaybe you should ask the Cylon you were fracking, Major\nLawson,\u201d said a female voice from behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The two officers turned around to see an athletic looking,\ntall, brown haired woman in her late thirties or early forties. She was dressed\nmodestly in a long black skirt ad simple white blouse. She wore no jewelry and\nher skin was clear of blemishes. Her hair was shoulder length and hung loose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Behind her was a pair of beefy men, dressed in uniforms\nsimilar to the police, her security detail. They looked alert, heads on a\nswivel, but they took no interest in the conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThat is acting commander to you Misses Brooks,\u201d Lawson\nreplied as she did not offer a hand&nbsp;\nshake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cNot if the council has to approve it,\u201d Brooks said with a\nself-assured look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cOnly the president and the quorum can change military law,\u201d\nLawson said, making an effort to keep her voice calm. \u201cMilitary law says I am a\ncommander until another officer is found. I believe president Roslyn and the\nquorum are on their way to the thirteenth colony.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cOur lawyers say the law of presidential succession states\nthat these powers fall in the event of death or incapacity to the executive of\nthe duly elected peoples council.\u201d Brooks looked quite calm, almost practiced.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cI don\u2019t have a lawyer,\u201d said Commander Lawson. \u201cI just have\na Battlestar that answers to my orders.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cAre you threatening a military coup? Are you going to defy\nmy lawful orders?\u201d Brooks still looked rehearsed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWe can set up a meeting,\u201d major Martin suggested. \u201cSurely\nthere must be somebody from the judge Advocate general\u2019s office alive,\nsomewhere in this fleet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cIf you ever expect to wear the commanders stars, you will\ndeal with the council and me.\u201d Said Mrs. Brooks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cFrankly, if given the choice between sleeping with\npoliticians and sleeping with a Cylon agent, I would rather be demoted to\ncommander air group and go back to sleeping with my subordinates. Perhaps\nAdmiral Cain would be available to meet with your council.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cI read your report commander,\u201d Brooks answered. \u201cWe have\nappointed the prosecutor and she will be if she is ever captured tried for\ncrimes against humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWell then perhaps you can allow me and Major Martin to\ndiscuss when we can bring the Solaria in the rehabilitation it so badly needs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cI am not done with you Lawson,\u201d Brooks interrupted the\nattempt to change the subject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cToday we are done, executive Brooks. My executive officer\nis named Major Maria Ramirez. Contact her and we will get you an appointment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cI have other tools at my discretion,\u201d Brooks threatened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThat my cubit will get you a cup of coffee,\u201d Lawson replied\nand turned away from the woman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A loud speaker came on: \u201cAction stations action stations set\ncondition one throughout the fleet. Contacts. Cylon Raiders CBDR. This is not a\ndrill. I will have to coordinate this from\nyour CIC.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">* * *<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Aboard the Mercury, Major Ramirez was outwardly confident.\nInside her stomach was tied in knots. She parked out orders, \u201cHave to see a CAG\nget me a count of how many birds he can get in the air. Immediately recall the\nCAP. Combat landings are authorized. Spin up anti-aircraft weaponry for\nautomatic. Twenty percent power turn to starboard, we have to be prepared to\nfight for 10 minutes to save the shipyard. Get me a line to mercury actual on\nboard the Falcon immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Commander Lawson picked up an old-style telephone with a\nmetal cord. She brought it up to her mouth and began to speak to Major Ramirez.\n\u201cSit rep.\u201d she demanded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The answer came out on loudspeakers. \u201cFour base stars for\nsupport ships just jumped in. They don\u2019t know their way around here they\u2019ve\nonly watched recon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cYou know the drill. I will come in the fleet from here. The\nMercury is yours. They will do you proud.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Major Maria Ramirez put her phone back in its holder. She\nwas not so sure. People are at least following her orders though so she kept\nbarking them out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cMore contacts,\u201d Arthur Garner reported. We have four more\nbase stars coming in from the other side. She let Major Martin direct the battle around the nearest shipbuilding\nplatform. She was looking at a larger picture. The latest Cylon arrivals were\nin the way if the fleet was going to escape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cMajor Martin,\u201d Lawson got his attention. \u201cThe ship building\nplatforms can jump from here but we can\u2019t.\u201d He nodded affirmative. \u201cWhy is\nthat?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWe have upgraded the computers on the platforms. They have\nmuch more compute power than a Battlestar. We have also limited the amount of\ninformation on the fleets NAV computers to make it more difficult for the\nCylons to trace us back to this location.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cGot it. We are going to have to get through a couple of\nbase stars to make that happen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cRoger that commander,\u201d he said. \u201cOnce the platforms jump,\nwe have a plan to execute. Mercury can take one and my base star squadron can\ntake the second one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cIt is going to be rough Valkyries against a base star.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cYes sir,\u201d Martin acknowledged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Ch 47 long combat sequence\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oVtPry-vr7I?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Fighting a delay action<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">.* * *<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThis Battlestar is assigned to the base star squadron?\u201d\nLawson was in disbelief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cI would not ask anyone under my command to do anything I\nwouldn\u2019t do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cCan two of these Valkyrie\u2019s take a base star?\u201d Lawson\nasked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cNot as fast as your Mercury can, but yes we can do it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cAll right, I am on the fleet tactical channel,\u201d Lawson said\ndonning a modern headset. \u201cLook\u2019s like six minutes until the first platform is\nready to jump out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Eva Lawson withdrew to a communications console. It showed\nevery ship in the shipyard. There was a lot of movement on the screen. She took\na mouse and clicked. Quietly she waited for the commander to answer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThis is Mercury actual,\u201d she said just loud enough to be\nheard. \u201cYou are venting fuel. Pull back from the action. We will punch a hole\nthrough to the jump point.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Cory Brooks, who had taken an instant dislike to Eva Lawson,\nstood arms folded, while the 41 year old woman showed leadership and did not\nfeel the need to shout. She kept tabs on all the warships and civilian vessels,\nlike a sheep dog, watching her sheep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWhere is fleet-wide?\u201d Lawson asked fumbling around with the mouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">An NCO stepped forward and pointed to the right control.\n\u201cThis is the commander,\u201d she said, hearing her ow voice echo on loudspeakers.\n\u201cAll ships move out. We are going to clear a path to a safe jump point.\nEverything has to move or the Cylons are going to destroy it. Prepare to\nexecute operation mobile exodus. The Battlerstar Solaria, is guarding the first\njump point. The future of this shipbuilding operation and the peoples of the\ntwelve colonies. We can not fail.\u201d There was a loud click when she ended the\ntransmission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cSo say we all!\u201d shouted a crew member working the weapons\nconsole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cSO SAY WE ALL!\u201d another officer near DRADIS shouted.\n\u201cReinforcements jumping in.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cAll part of the plan,\u201d Major Martin explained. \u201cKeeps us\nfrom getting ambushed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThey are firing nukes. I have five, no six heading for\ntargets.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cSpin up the Valkyrie\u2019s\u201d Major Martin ordered. \u201cWe need to\nget moving to take out or drive away the base star blocking our way to the\nfirst save jump point.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cI see a Minerva leading a charge flanked by a squadron of Valkyries,\u201d Lawson said in disbelief.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThat would be the Apollo,\u201d Martin reported. It was difficult for her to\nunderstand what was going on from only one of the displays. She got a feel for\nit when she looked up and down at both. There were two ships between the Mercury\nand the safe jump out point, calculated for the fleet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">She whispered to herself the sequence of events. First she\nhad to get the two base stars to expend their ammunition and harmlessly take it\ndown with flak and PCM fire. Then they would need to turn the big main guns on\nthe front of the ship toward the target. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The initial charge needed to spread the targets apart and\nisolate them. \u201cEasy,\u201d she said, \u201cjust like in the simulator. \u201cMister Garner\nhave helm bring us into the attack pattern.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cYes sir,\u201d he confirmed the orders and then relayed them to\nthe helm. The ships turn movements were quiet and fluid. Soon the guns would\nstart to bark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Note to reader: The next three video sequences occur at the\nsame time. She was in the CIC of the Falcon. She was\na tiny ship, though this was the best protected part, it was madness to go with\na pair of Valkyries against a Cylon base star.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWolf-pack formation,\u201d ordered Martin.
