She\nhad lost a lot of weight and had finally had a new uniform issued to\nher. She looked good in the immaculately pressed blue uniform. She\nwaited for the Admiral&#8217;s secretary to escort him into his tiny,\nbarely furnished office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The Admiral did not look very good.\nThis eyes were sunken and he looked like he was going downhill pretty\nquickly. His movements were stiff and his hand shook badly as he\npaged through the report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cSo Major,\u201d he asked after\nmotioning her to a chair. \u201cDo you think our distraction plan is\nworking?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cAdmiral Cobb,\u201d she answered. \u201cWe\nhave been at it for three weeks now. We have literally run in excess\nof one thousand sorties. The Cylon network remains hacked and they\nhave not moved Commander Lawson. What the hell are we waiting for?\nI&#8217;ve got the equivalent of two squadrons of warships waiting in line\nat the shipyard to get damage repaired.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cIs the operational tempo too high?\u201d\nAdmiral Cobb asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cNot necessarily. Our hack has led us\nto understand that the Cylons have mothballed sixty base stars\nbecause they can&#8217;t supply the Tylium. This is a great outcome,\u201d she\nconcluded, \u201cbut we don&#8217;t have Commander Lawson back and our\nreadiness is dropping every day this campaign drags on.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThat is my assessment. Take a look\nat this.\u201d He took up a remote in his quivering right hand and\npointed it at a wall mounted monitor. He flicked another button. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Cavil came online. \u201cAll right,\u201d he\nsaid. \u201cYou have made your point. If you stop attacking our fuel\nsupply and our other logistics we will give Commander Lawson back to\nyou.  This is a one time offer. If you don&#8217;t mind picking up some\ntroublemakers on Caprica, we can make a deal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWe are going to do the negotiation,\nbut will launch our daily raids. Your task force will be hitting a\nshipyard on the Cylon side of the old Armistice line. It has hundreds\nof first war ships that they were trying to get ready for operations\nbefore we squeezed their fuel supplies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cJust blow the crap out of it\nAdmiral?\u201d \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cYes and while you are doing that,\nyou will launch a two raptor sortie of elite Marines that will jump\nin and infiltrate the detention center we believe Commander Lawson is\nin.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cNo backup?\u201d Ramirez asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWe think small is better in this\ncase. We will throw them off balance by attacking during the\nnegotiation. The commando team will meet you at a way point that we\nwill share if the rescue mission is successful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">He pushed a small jeweler&#8217;s box across\nthe table. \u201cYou are out of uniform commander,\u201d he said softly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cOh no,\u201d Ramirez backed away. \u201cMy\ncrew already has a commander.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cOf course they do,\u201d Cobb smiled.\n\u201cThis is partially to let the Cylons believe we have given up on\nCommander Lawson. But after this mission, you will have a new job.\nThe Saturn is ready for trials. We believe it is beneath the dignity\nof a Mercury Class Battlestar to be commanded by a Major.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cYes Sir,\u201d Ramirez took the box,\nsaluted and requested permission to leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cGood hunting commander,\u201d he said.\n\u201cDismissed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">* * *<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The voices canceled each other out as\neveryone shouted at once when Commander Ramirez gathered the senior\nofficers in the ready room. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cAll right,\u201d she thumped a book on\nthe table. \u201cListen up!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cShut the frak up!\u201d Jaybird roared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cAll right, we have a mission, a\nshipyard to destroy. While we are there, we will be launching an\nelite Marine commando force that will hopefully liberate the\ncommander.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWhy can&#8217;t we back up the commando\nforce?\u201d Sausage asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cBecause those are our orders. If a\nMercury class ship with a six ship fleet jumps into your\nneighborhood, you are going to know that something is up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cCommander Lawson is our commander,\u201d\nshouted a voice in the back of the room. \u201cWe should have waited for\nher.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cFirst,\u201d Ramirez spoke in a harsh,\nfirm voice. \u201cThis is NOT a democracy. We follow the orders we are\ngiven. If the Cylons have the same reaction as you knuckleheads then\nit is perfect. We want the Cylons to believe we have written off\nCommander Lawson. Finally if this works it will be my last mission as\nMercury actual. The Saturn is ready for trials. I have been given my\nown command.\u201d\\<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">She then pointed a finger at \u201cSausage\u201d\nwho was in his flight suit. \u201cI get to pick one transfer to bring\nalong for the adventure. \u201cSausage,\u201d she repeated. \u201cHow would\nyou like to be my CAG?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cCopy that,\u201d he replied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cYou will lead red squadron on this\nstrike. Try not to get yourself killed today. It will take four jumps\nto get to our strike location. Make sure everything is ready for\naction. We need to hit those jump coordinates bang on.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cFor Commander Lawson!\u201d \u201cSausage\u201d\nshouted thrusting his fist in the air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cSo say we all!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">* * * \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Usually after a few FT jumps a colonial\nofficer got used to the feeling. There was often a queasy feeling as\nthe jump began. The feeling never went away, most of the time you\njust forgot about it as you piled up jumps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Commander Maria Ramirez was not that\nkind of person. Every jump made her sick to her stomach. She wanted\nto lean over an wretch as if began. Soon enough the white flash of\nlight faded and she heard the noise of systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cAll fleet ships are  on DRADIS. We\nhave the Cylon shipyard up and the intel weenies were right, there is\nnot even a CAP up.\u201d The DRADIS officer reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cOrion&#8217;s exit stealth mode, all ships\nlaunch all vipers. Full offensive profile, target the big ships\nfirst.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Now it was the nerves of battle, people\nrisking their lives on her orders. Commander, she thought. I am a\nfrakking IT geek Lieutenant, what is the big idea calling me a\ncommander. Her stomach contracted into a solid ball of lead. They put\nthe chatter of the viper pilots as they talked and announced they\nwere destroying targets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">This was completely unreal to her. She\nwas going to get her own command. That was a big joke. She was still\nwriting code to help further hack the Cylon network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">After about five minutes it was over.\nIt was a turkey shoot. The enemy barely shot back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">It was now time for the second jump. She was kept in a five point chain set up. Both ankles,\nboth wrists and the steel collar on her neck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Just as the Cavil model was getting to\nthe  height of his pleasure, she reached up with her chained right\nwrist and wrapped it smoothly around his throat. So many times had\nshe practiced it. She yanked down with all her strength expecting\nthat she would have to strangle him. There was a very loud and\nsatisfying crack as his neck snapped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Commander Eva Lawson pushed her hips\nforward getting the dead toaster out of her. She carefully rolled him\noff of her, the body needed to come to rest within the very short\nreach of her hands. It did. This one was a regular. He assaulted her\nnearly every day. He kept a ring of keys sometimes unlocking a limb\nto enable him to try a new position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">It took ten seconds to find the keys,\nnearly thirty to unchain her wrists and ankles. Next the lock that\nchained her neck to the floor. Swearing in frustration, she could not\nfind he key to the steel collar on her neck. \u201cFrak it,\u201d she\nwhispered, walking carefully out of the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">* * *<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The negotiation meeting point was on a\nsnow covered icy world, four plotted jumps away from the Colonies. It\nhad been a resort before the first war, gradually falling further\naway from Colonial influence as the battle line moved closer to the\ncolonies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The hotel lobby was shabby, having been\nleft idle for five decades. There was a table and a Cavil model\nseated at it. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Admiral Cobb had taken the meeting\nagainst all advice. He wanted to measure the human toaster model with\nhis own eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Cavil did not get up or offer to shake\nhands. \u201cLets skip the pleasantries,\u201d he demanded. \u201cWhat is your\nresponse to our offer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWe are not interested in making your\noccupation of Caprica easier. He have a Cavil model in custody. We\nwill trade him for Commander Laws.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cYou have proof of life Admiral\nCobb?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The Admiral dropped a mobile phone on\nthe table. It lit up showing the glaring face  of a Cavil model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cAbout the cease fire?\u201d Cavil\nasked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201dLeave the Colonies and we will\nconsider it,\u201d Cobb said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cYou aren&#8217;t negotiating in good\nfaith?\u201d The model number one put his finger on his ear,\nmanipulating a device inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cI&#8217;m not negotiating at all. The\nPeople&#8217;s Council Executive made it quite clear. Trade the Cylon for\nLawson, on the off chance you have not extracted every secret from\nher.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cIt&#8217;s not good faith to attack our\ndefenseless shipyards during a negotiation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cFrak off toaster,\u201d the Admiral\nbanged the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cRacist!\u201d replied the Cylon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cProof of life.\u201d \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cIt&#8217;s in your in box at your base.\nYou really should upgrade your firewall.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWhere will the exchange be?\u201d Cobb\npressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cYou can pick her up this time\ntomorrow, right here. Bring the Mercury. I wonder what her crew will\nthink of a pornographic proof of life tape. Oh, I forgot to tell you\nwe sent copies to every ship in your fleet. Those firewall&#8217;s really\nneed some work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Cavil shut his portfolio, turned and\nwalked out of the room. He waved an arm. \u201cDon&#8217;t forget to close the\ndoor on the way out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">* * *<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Commander Eva Lawson dispatched the\nCylon woman with a swift grab of her chin and a hard wrench to the\nright. Dripping with sweat, she dragged the dead woman and dragged\nher into a dark corner. It took seventy five seconds to relieve her\nof her clothing and other possessions. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The Battlestar Commander had memorized\nthe path she had been walked from the landing pad and a self\nsatisfied grin came over her face as she saw a heavy raider was\nsitting on the pad unoccupied. The former CAG made a bet she could\nfly the thing. First she used the keys she had taken from the black\nhaired Cylon and took some choice items out of an arms locker. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">One thing was certain, they were not\ngoing to get her alive this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">* * *<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The Elite Marine commander had been\ntold to expect heavy resistance, but their jump had been very\nprecise. They were low in the atmosphere and there was no way they\ncould have been detected. When their pilot swore and jerked the ship\nhard, the commander caught a glimpse of a Cylon Heavy Raider flying\nstraight at them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cRanger one, this is ranger two. Get\na lock on that key and kill him before he calls the other toasters.\u201d|<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cFiring.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">* * *<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Not thirty seconds after pulling the\nship out of the landing bay she was face to face with a raptor. She\ndodged it as quickly as she could when her ship started to take fire.\nA warning came on showing a pair of raptors bearing down on her.\nSince they were firing she assumed that this was her long awaited\nrescue party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Where was the communications gear on\nthis toaster contraption, she thought as she dodged and then tried to\nmove the ship into a higher orbit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">She felt the deck fall from under her\nfeet. System warning barked out. She found the communications gear as\nshe struggled to keep the raider aloft. \u201cThis is Eva Lawson,\nMercury Actual to colonial raptors. I am a friend. Do not fire. I\nrepeat, I am a friend, do not fire.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cHow do you know that you are you,\u201d\ncame the challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">She recognized the voice.  Where had\nshe met this guy. On a drunken shore leave no doubt. Suddenly the\nname came to her. \u201cVince? Vincent Roberts. We met on shore leave\nthree years ago on Picon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cGod&#8217;s damn it I knew I remembered\nyou.  We stayed up until 3 am drinking and then we&#8230;.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cYeah that&#8217;s me,\u201d she interrupted.\n\u201cI&#8217;m losing altitude pretty fast. That was some damned nice\nshooting there. Top of the class. I&#8217;m going to put down and you can\nrescue me properly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The Cylon craft was very unfamiliar to\nher. There were warning sirens and flashing lights everywhere as she\ndesperately tried to land the doomed heavy raider. Just a few meters\noff a relatively flat field, she  lost control and the heavy raider\nplowed into the dirt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Commander Lawson blacked out. The next\nthing she remembered was Vince Roberts a conquest she thought she had\nforgotten cleaning dirt and mud from her face. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cYou didn&#8217;t have to steal a heavy\nraider and crash it to get my attention. I&#8217;d frak you again any\ntime.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cJust get me the frak back to my\nBattlestar. That&#8217;s an order.\u201d She closed her eyes, not feeling her\nlimbs blacking out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">His orders had been to take her to a\nmeeting point and he followed them. In thirty minutes he was putting\ndown on the flight pod of the Battlestar Mercury. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThis is Marine one,\u201d he\ninterrupted on the wireless. \u201cWe have the commander. She is pretty\nbusted up.
