The buzzing was annoying so she answered it immediately.It was her executive officer Major Simmons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">&#8220;Do you have a conference call with Commander Ramirez and Admiral Cobb. Corey Brooks is also on the conference call.&#8221; He reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">&#8220;Who is it?&#8221; She asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">&#8220;It&#8217;s audio only but he says his brother cavil a model number one humanoid Cylon. Everyone is waiting for you to join the call.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">&#8220;Don&#8217;t let me slow you down put\nthem on.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">&#8220;Them sir?&#8221; He asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">&#8220;A little Cylon joke,&#8221; she smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">&#8220;We have an announcement for you\nhumans. We have decided that the attack on the colonies was a\nmistake. We lowered ourselves to the level of humans and committed\natrocities. We are going to leave the colonies now. They are yours to\ninhabit again no harm no foul.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Corey Brooks answered him, &#8220;No harm no foul? You exterminated billions and left our worlds to be irradiated for hundreds of thousands of years. You&#8217;re just calling that even?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">&#8221; Funny that&#8217;s what Adama and said when we told him. President Roslyn promoted him to Admiral weeks before you got your new job. Funny. I think he&#8217;s your senior officer now by a few weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">&#8220;Are you in contact with him can\nyou take a message to them?&#8221; Asked Cory Brooks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">&#8220;Well we&#8217;ve temporary lost track of them. You see they don&#8217;t know you exist.\nDo you think he&#8217;s going to be very helpful to us as your peoples\nleader?\u201d he asked. &#8220;I do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">&#8220;Well thank you for nothing,&#8221;\nAdmiral Lawson remarked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">&#8220;Please let us finish,&#8221; the\nhumanoid model continued. &#8220;There was a rebellion on all 12 of\nthe colonies. They no longer have us to fight. They also no longer\nhave access to anti-radiation medication. There were about 30,000 of\nthem are all 12 colonies. Are you going to let them die a horrible\ndeath of radiation poisoning? Or you could surprise us and rescue\nyour fellow humans.\u201d \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">&#8220;Why did you tell us this?\u201d\nasked Brooks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">&#8220;Well we&#8217;re not as bad as humans\nwe can&#8217;t just leave them to be slowly killed. We prefer killing\npeople quickly with nuclear weapons.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">There were some interference at some\ngrumbling on the human side of the conference call. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">&#8220;You should be careful we&#8217;ve lost track of some of our brothers in some relics from the first war with the humans. I now declare that the second war between the Cylon and human is over. Good luck and safe travels.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">&#8220;Admiral Lawson,&#8221; the executive of the People&#8217;s Council ordered. I would like you to send recon into the colonies and validate this models words. We will prepare rescue missions as soon as you let us know it safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The intel did not look very good. It\nwould take ten jumps to get the refugees from their home colony to an\nassembly point where they could be transferred to other ships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">There was a convention of obsolete\nCylon ships jumping from place to place, looking for a fight. This\nwas peace, Cylon style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Admiral Lawson walked up to the lectern\nin the pilot ready room of the Athena. She had reluctantly given her\nXO command of the Athena. Crews were pretty thin and they were\npulling pilots out of training to put them to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Though this was the pilots ready room,\nthere were several knuckle draggers present. This was acknowledgment\nof the important role that would be played by the maintenance team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cDuring the first Cylon war, they\ncalled this the Anabasis run. Ten jumps to get refugees from outlying\noutposts back to Caprica. This time we will be taking them from the\nColonies to our new homes. It will take 10 jumps and it will be\nhard.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThe Cylons left a large number of\nolder ships and Cylons behind, with the intention of making us spend\nresources of blood and treasure to recover these people. The average\nrun could bring us 15,000 refugees. These people have fought the\nCylons for nearly a year. A lot of them will be available for us to\ncrew some more ships and strengthen our defenses for when the war\nresumes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThese people are running low on\nradiation meds. They need our help. We are going to do our best for\nthem and minimize our losses. It will be approximately one jump per\nday. We may have to keep this up for twenty or perhaps 30 days.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cYour are going to be exhausted. You will need to do more than your best. We have 318,000 souls under your protection. If we increase that a lot, we will get stronger. Any questions?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cIf the Cylons left the Colonies, why\ncan&#8217;t we just move back in?\u201d An orange suited viper maintenance\ntechnician asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThe radiation from all those nukes\nhas left the twelve colonies uninhabitable,\u201d Ramirez took the\nquestion. \u201cIt may be a hundred thousand years or more before these\nworlds can be safe. They may never be safe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cIt is going to be one jump per day.\nYou need to keep the freighters and the Celestra&#8217;s safe. You will be\ndrawing your supplies off one and parts needed for repairs off the\nother,\u201d Lawson said forcefully. \u201cJump off tomorrow 0600 hours.\nLets do this!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A chorus of \u201cSo say we all\u201d echoed\nthrough the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Rose Carey was a level 6 maintenance\ntechnician, who had mustered out of the Colonial fleet two weeks\nbefore the attacks on the Colonies. She was on a cruise ship with her\nfiancee when it was damaged during the initial assault on Gemenon.\nThe ship managed with the help of herself and a dozen other former\nColonial Fleet veterans to make emergency repairs and reach a muster\npoint set up for refugees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">After three months in a refugee camp,\nmoving twice she was more than happy to get into the service. She\nserved several months on a Valkyrie, before being promoted and sent\nto the Mercury. She was made an assistant deck chief there and\ntransferred to the Saturn when it was commissioned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">She was bitter, her fiancee had been killed several weeks back and was glad to have a place to sleep and get three meals a day. Sleep was often forgotten during the high operational tempo that was maintained for months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">She got up the morning of the first\njump back from Tauron and was very pleased. There was only light\ndamage to a couple of vipers. The enemy force sent to stop them was\nnot very strong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">She made a note in her diary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Day 310 of the second war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Easy day. Ten planes damaged, not big\ndeal. If this is all the Cylons can bring we are going to be okay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Bruce Jenkins was a 24 year old viper\npilot, having graduated from the VR school on the Saturn and doing\nactual flight training on an old Artemis class battlestar. He was\nassigned to the Saturn and then promoted to Lieutenant and assigned\nto help new pilots assimilate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">On his first mission of the Anabasis run, he had intercepted some inbound ordinance and assisted on a kill in his Mark seven viper. It was a pretty good day. Jump 2. Resistance\nhad been stepped up. A couple of viper pilots had gotten blotted out\nof the sky today. Another dozen had gotten shot up pretty good. There\nwas smoke coming out of his high engine when he did the final\nchecklist. Rose Carey sniffed and checked the undercarriage of the\nMk.7. There was damage and hydraulic fluid was leaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cCan you get it ready for the next\nop?\u201d Jenkins asked, apologetically. \u201cYeah probably,\u201d she said,\nwiping grease off her forehead. \u201cIt&#8217;s going to take a while.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cYou can&#8217;t take them at too sharp an\nangle nugget,\u201d Jenkins, call sign &#8216;Cruiser&#8217; warned the youthful\npilot as he tried to bring down some inbound missiles. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cHeads up,\u201d warned another pilot.\n\u201cYou got a raider on your six!\u201d \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cBreak! Break! Break!\u201d Jenkins\nordered. \u201cDon&#8217;t worry about the missiles, don&#8217;t get killed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThere was a flash and a scream.\u201d\nThe nugget, who had not even gotten a call sign was gone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cFRAK!\u201d Jenkins shouted and banged\na fist on his arm rests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cCruiser break right, you have a\nraider on you. Classic type.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Jenkins heard something snap and his\nMk.7 became difficult to control. He avoided the raider, jinked his\nViper, grunting as he did it and put a killing shot in three \nconsecutive Cylons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cNice kills Cruiser!\u201d congratulated\none pilot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cShut the frak up. We lost a nugget\ntoday.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cRTB RTB RTB all vipers. Combat\nlandings are authorized.\u201d  On landing, he realized that he had hit\ntoo hard, damaging his gear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">He looked sheepish at Rose Carey and\napologized as his Mk.7 was dragged into the bay. \u201cIt&#8217;s gonna take\nme all night to fix that,\u201d she complained. She gestured helplessly\nat the damaged landing strut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cI&#8217;m really sorry booster,\u201d he said\nusing her call sign. \u201cLet me help.\u201d He stripped off his flight\nsuit and grabbed a wrench.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A smart assed remark was on her lips\nbut she accepted the help and let him start stripping the landing\nstrut after she locked the Mk.7 into place and lifted it half a\nmeter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Day 312. Diary Entry. Sleepy. Fixed lots of bent birds. Jump 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carey wrote in her diary. \u201cCruiser came back nearly in tears. His squadron commander was killed. We now have a back log of 30 damaged Mk.7 vipers. We are working around the clock. Several convoy ships got hit by enemy fire today. They tried to thin out my crew today to get people to assist in the repairs. While in the\nmaintenance bay they put the feed of the squadrons on the speakers.\nIt was scary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSplash one, splash two.\u201d One pilot\nsaid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have six inbound missiles, guided\nbearing down on that Artemis.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo don&#8217;t spin up flak you idiot, we\nhave it under control,\u201d Cruiser warned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat Valkyrie just took a missile in\nthe port pod.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHey whoever is firing those mines,\nnot through a squadron configuration.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOooeee!\u201d A pilot shouted. \u201cJust\nsay a Revanant eat two mines. She&#8217;s breaking up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAll batteries switch to target two,\u201d\nRamirez&#8217;s voice interrupted. \u201cSalvo mode.\u201d She sounded\ntired.<br><br>\u201cThree bent birds touching down on the port ventral\npad,\u201d the announcement from the LSO warned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhich pod are we in?\u201d Rose\nwondered. \u201cStarboard, that means right. Good. I don&#8217;t have to fix\nthose birds.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAll vipers RTB now now now. Combat\nlandings are authorized.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDamn it!\u201d Carey grunted. \u201cThose\nfrakking combat landings bang up the birds and keep my crews up all\nnight.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPrepare for jump in five, four, three, two, one seconds. Jump 5. \u201cTen birds were not\nready for launch today from this deck when the Cylons jumped in. We\nare dead tired. One of my guys fell asleep in a cockpit, while he was\nreplacing some circuit breakers. Rose was was short and thin, with\ndirty blonde hair. Her eyes were red from lack of sleep,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat the FRAK!\u201d she said when she\nsaw Cruisers viper. \u201cIt&#8217;s going to take ten hours to have that\nthing ready for the next fight. Cruiser, you are white as a ghost.\u201d\nShe was suddenly concerned. His windshield was cracked. He collapsed,\nwhile climbing down his ladder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was grounded for the next mission. Rose wrote\nin her diary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI really appreciate Cruisers help\nwith the grunt work. He is crappy as a knuckle dragger, but he does\nhelp us get things done. We worked through the battle and got all the\nbacklogged vipers back in action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTwenty more came in after the jump. Will this ever end? I&#8217;ve had seven or eight hours of sleep this week. He is a hero in my book, getting up every\nday to defend this fleet and the civies we protect. He is also good\nlooking athletic build, 1.8 meters tall with light brown hair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I could live with that. It would not be\nsettling. I hear he is dating a pilot from red squadron, Tamar\nMiller. She landed on our deck today as an emergency, due to a combat\nlanding collision. She is a beauty, perfect figure. I wish she had\npicked someone else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We jump, we launch all our birds, they\nshoot down missiles, then raiders. Then my team fixes up the birds\nfor another jump. This pace is terrible on people and equipment.\nEvery day the freighter drops us off more spare parts, sometimes\nentire vipers to replace our losses. That is why we surround them\nlike a cocoon.<br><br>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cruiser brought his viper home today without a scratch. He gave me a high five and then a huge hug when he reached the bottom of the ladder. Jump 8.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rose writes in her diary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lieutenant Tamar Miller call sign\n\u201cBlack hair\u201d due to her long mane of perfectly black hair was\nappointed blue squadron commander yesterday. She is Cruiser&#8217;s boss. I\nwonder if they will continue to date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She and the commander stopped by to encourage us. Turns out \u201cBlack Hair\u201d started out in the fleet as a cook after washing out as a pilot. She baked the entire deck gang cookies as a thank you.
