Book 4: Chapter 24 “The Spider”
“Admiral Lawson recording. We have spent 4 days hidden like a spider. We have listened to signals intelligence. We have been able to track 40 different Cylon ships that have passed through this part of the rock field we have spent so much time in.”
“The number of ships we are getting soft pings on has been going up. Captain Miller, HG has managed to give us a sign of life without giving away his location. It must be very hard work for him to stretch out the fuel supply of the raptors. He managed to share a video some hours ago.”
“We have tracked a Cylon gun fleet. Had we just jumped without reconnaissance, we might have let the gunship fleet get in close and lose a battle that we should win. So after 4 days we got our rest. Minor repairs are going well. Commander Modi has urged us to take this particular fleet out.
“Our plan is to jump in far away and try and line up some extreme long range targets. Our air wing will be introducing this fleet to some new, hard hitting tactics. We will see how these tactics work soon enough.
10 minutes later in CIC.
Admiral Lawson walks in, takes her place, looking up on DRADIS and tactical displays.
“Sit rep.”
“Major Jacobs stood by her side. CAP is landed, All other birds are in the tubes, ready to launch on the other side. Jump keys are inserted. Nav is verified, All four ships report ready to jump. Recon raptor rotated home five minutes ago. The Cylon fleet shows ten contacts, all gunships. Four, perhaps five Arachne class ships, 1 squadron per ship. No carriers, no base stars. As per your battle plan our jump in point is far enough away from the gunships to prevent swarm tactics. The assault raptors and viper squadrons will have plenty of time to set up their ambush.”
“Jump the fleet.”
Solaria Deck officer: “Contacts, 4 large gun ships 6 or 7 small ones. We have time to set up the planned ambush.”

XO Mercury: “Launch them all. Mercury to pilots. Situational awareness is key here.
Solaria Actual: “They are flying straight at us. Launch the next salvo!!”
“This is ‘pack-rat’, assault raptors are in position. All A-raps, weapons free, weapons free!”
“Fraking Ay! Lighting them up!”

“This is pack-rat, we are painting the second wave. We are winchester on missiles. Battlestars can fire ordinance.Targets are painted!”
“Arachne three is scratched. Arachne four is the next target. He’s breaking to his left, our right. Arachne four is on the run!”

“Arache 4 is launching. Vampires inbound. Mercury CIC switching to salvo mode.”
“Solaria Actual, more targets, firing missile salvo.”
“CIC Mercury is now tracking Arache five and six. Talon six seven and eight are secondary.”
“Solaria CIC acknowledged. 5 new bogies are tracking.”
CIC deck officer ‘That is three talons, off the board.”
XO: Mercury “That’s all folks. Combat landings for everyone. The third wave is jumping in near the Cylon base.
